There are several topical moisturizers you can use to keep your mini pig’s skin healthy and hydrated. Here are a few options you can try – just remember to always spot test new products to check for any adverse reactions over 24 to 48 hours.
Aloe Vera
This plant has natural anti-inflammatory properties and can help soothe irritated skin. It’s also a great option to apply after your pig has been out in the sun – it won’t protect them from sunburn (use children’s sunscreen!), but it can help alleviate it if it happens. Some mini pigs may be allergic to aloe vera, so be sure to do a patch test before applying it to a larger area.
Coconut Oil
This oil is great for moisturizing dry skin and can also help with minor skin irritations. Coconut oil can also be fed as part of a daily diet to increase healthy dietary fats for healthy skin from the inside out – but feed only 1-2 tbsp max as it is high in fat. It’s also important to note that when used topically it can clog pores, so use it sparingly and avoid applying it to areas prone to acne.
Olive Oil
Rich in antioxidants, olive oil can help soothe dry, itchy skin. Olive oil could also be part of a pig’s daily diet as an alternative to coconut oil, and those antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties can work from the inside out. However, like coconut oil, it’s high in fat, and can clog pores, so use (or feed) it sparingly.
Mineral Oil
This odorless, colourless oil is often used in skincare products because it’s lightweight and non-comedogenic (meaning it won’t clog pores). However, it doesn’t provide any additional benefits beyond hydration, so it may not be the best choice if your mini pig has specific skin concerns.
Shea Butter
This natural fat extracted from the shea tree is a great moisturizer for dry skin. It’s also high in vitamins A and E, which can help promote healthy skin.
Jojoba Oil
Similar in composition to the natural oils produced by our skin, jojoba oil is a great choice for moisturizing. It’s also non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog pores.
Vitamin E Oil
This oil is a powerful antioxidant that can help protect the skin from damage. It’s also great for moisturizing and can help soothe irritated skin.
As always, be sure to spot test when you try new products and monitor for any adverse reactions. Also, if your pig has persistent skin conditions or open sores, it is absolutely recommended to get veterinary guidance for your mini pig’s routine.
For the love of pigs!
